Al Weitz, Director

Al started attending the Monroe County West Chapter of SPEBSQSA in 1977 at age 13. He joined the chapter–and the Society–at age 15, served as Assistant Director for eight years, and sang both lead and baritone. Al sang lead in his first quartet, Finally Four, received Barbershopper of the Year, and sang with the chorus when they won the Seneca Land District Chorus Championship. At age 17, Al was hired as Director of the Niagara Orleans Chapter of SPEBSQSA. He directed the chapter for three years, including the 1983 Seneca Land District Fall Competition.

In 1989, Al joined the Chorus of the Genesee, Rochester Chapter of SPEBSQSA. Al was appointed Assistant Director in 1995 and held that position for 12 years. In 1995 he was also appointed COG Community Service Chorus Director. His second quartet, Easy Street (1993-1996), won third place in the Seneca Land District Quartet Contest (1995). In 1997, Al was awarded a Bachelor of Barbershop Harmony degree. 1997 also marked the formation of his third quartet, Notably Yours, which also included his son Jason. The quartet sang together for ten years and will always have a special place in his heart. In May of 2007, Al was appointed Director of The Chorus of the Genesee, a dream come true. Al was named Barbershopper of the Year of the Rochester Chapter in December 2007. That month, Al joined his fourth quartet, Fever Pitch.

Al was also a member of the Salamanca Chapter of SPEBSQSA in 2003 and 2004, singing in their competition chorus.

Al has attended many SPEBSQSA schools in order to learn his barbershop craft, including Seneca Land COTS Director Classes, Seneca Land Mini-HEPs & Pow-Wow, and Harmony College/Director.s College. In 2002, Al received his SPEBSQSA Director Certification after completion of a four-year Barbershop College curriculum. He has also studied piano and music theory privately.

He has served as the director of the St. John.s Lutheran Church choir since 1980. When not singing or directing, he works as a mechanic at Strong Memorial Hospital and loves to golf. Al is the father of two children, Jason and Nicole.
